Recent Reads/Purchases

Postby Tomer Soiker » Tue Mar 01, 2011 5:20 am

(Well, not just trades...)

For some time I didn't have much opportunity to read the huge pile of books (mostly GNs) built on my shelf for the last year. Aside for a book here and there, I've spent the last 2-3 months reading only floppies. I mean, not the regular monthlies, but books such as the DC Comics Presents line and other specials/one-shots. Anyway, once done with these books and waiting for my next store pick-up, I've got back to bigger books and I have to admit, most of them turned out to be disappointments. purchases based mostly on a gut feeling. When did this business become such a wild gamble? Was I just blind to it all for a long time? I any event, here are some short reviews:

Fables Vol. 10: The Good Prince - I took about a year off from the series after Vol. 9 so I could buy other books. I didn't know that I'll miss this epos so much. I loved how Willingham took what seemed like a background character since day one and pushed him up to be such a grand protagonist. Can't wait for more. 4.5 out of 5 gazillion items you can carry inside the Witching Cloak.

The Walking Dead Vol. 4: The Heart's Desire - I start losing interest in this series. I didn't like most of the second volume (read it as part of the first HC) but somehow got back to the series after a few years by buying the third TPB last year. It was okay. The fourth one, however, despite introducing some interesting new character and featuring brutal scenes, ended poorly. Didn't like the relationships (both romantic and platonic), nor Rick's seeming craziness and eventually raging speech in the end. Shouldn't they meet a suicidal scientist or something? 2.5 out of 5 blowjobs given by a badass zombie killer you just met.

Fogtown - I reviewed a book or two from Vertigo Crime back when I was writing for the main site, expressing my love for that line. Over a year since it started, didn't realize I'll end up loving only two books (with reservations regarding one) out of five I'll be reading at this point. This one is advertised as a "revolutionary" crime/noir story, but it takes too many aspects from older and better noir tales, such as L.A. Confidential. There are heavy clues to homosexuality in this 1950s San Francisco setting, which brings us to some idiotic scenes (such as the main villain threatening the protagonist with molestation) and even dumber, cheesy finale. The art is pretty ugly, but I take it more as an artistic choice, to show the imperfection of the characters. Or some similar bullcrap. 2 out of 5 blowjobs given by a ruthless giant ex-athlete crimelord bodyguard you just met.

A Sickness in the Family - Another VC book that was quite better from the one above, but it didn't escape some messy storytelling. First of all, the opening scene is unclear and could be interpreted partially only much later. My biggest gripe is that writer Denise Mina practically took a big note from Agatha Christie, with no shame. I realized pretty early and by then could foresee the eventual twist. Otherwise, the story is written quite well, not without cliches and the usual family drama most American TV shows are guilty for (although the story is set in Scotland). The art by Antonio Fuso is the best part and almost saves the book. 3 out of 5 afternoon delights with the marriage counselor.

A Friendly Game - A horrifying thriller starring two kids that reminded me a lot of the 1993 movie The Good Son with Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin. On a boring afternoon Kevin shows his best friend Todd a dead mouse caught in a trap. The kids play with it and later abuse a living mouse. Months pass by and Todd ups the stakes, attempting to kill puppy. Kevin saves the puppy and wants to end the "game," but Todd is way deep in it, creating new rules and targeting new, bigger victims. It all becomes too brutal and blood-soaked, but Kevin is the only one able to stop Todd's "game." With a simplistic, "children's book" art and thrilling plot, this is one of the best reads I had a in a long time. Fascinating. 4 out of 5 headless mice hanged over the sink.

The Sisters' Luck - Twin sisters who got separated over the years, one steals good luck and the other attracts bad luck, need to be together in order to cancel each other's powers. But why would the one with good luck give up on her beautiful life for a depressing sister that blames her for everything? And what are two albinos with magical powers have to with it all? Sadly, creator Shari Chankhamma misses the point and kills a good premise with a stupid story, lousy characterization, lazy storytelling and an uneven Manga-influenced art (mostly due to the albinos part [you don't get it until someone mentions this fact], horrible fighting scenes and the lack of color). 1.5 out of 5 demonic motorbikes.
"Rumors of my early demise were highly exaggerated."

After hearing the PoP-cast talk about it so much, I gave the new-ish G.I. Joe series a try. In general, I liked all of it except Origins, the art style just bugged me. My favorite by far had to the Cobra series, felt a lot like Sleeper, put out by Wildstorm, which I god damn loved.

I've recently read:

Beyond!: I've read it before but after dwayne passed away i wanted to buy it honor him and i really enjoyed it. It really is a good book, He was so good at capturing how people talk

superman secret origins: I really dug it. I think it did a good job of creating a solid origin for superman while honoring older origins.

I'm currently reading:

the last defenders its good i really ought to finish it.

Been reading a huge stack of Red Sonja and Queen Sonja from D.E.

I've continued to buy the issues even though I was incredibly behind on them.

Today I read a volume of Ed Brubaker's run on Daredevil. I can't remember the title off the top of my head, but it was co-written by Greg Rucka. By the end I really wanted Marvel to make a Dakota North ongoing. I really like that character.

I am reading Grimm Fairy Tales volume 1. I like the artwork but the story is not that engaging and they end very abruptly. I think they need to expand more on the stories. I will still keep reading the series it may just be the specific stories I am reading.

The thing is, I usually come away with so much more, but since I only shopped on sunday, and just for around an hour or so, that's all I got. Trust me, I wanted much more, but ran short of time. But when I hit wizard in august, I really only plan on meeting 3 people, outside of that and a lil cosplaying, I'm gonna do a shit ton of back issue shopping. And not even just filling holes, but random stuff too.
