Seen any movies lately?

You know... They're like TV, but longer. And generally more finite.

Saw Brave the other day. Good but a bit of unmet expectation and a very messy story.

The plot and characters are somewhat halfway developed. Merinda has "I don't want to be married" syndrome but I kept asking myself "Why?". Is it because she equates being married with growing old and dying? Does she not want to be a ruler and want to be a warrior? I would have gladly accepted those two instead of "I want to chose who I married because the modern movie audience only understands simplistic reasons" and that just reeks of naivety and cop out writing. In general I think she's a soso protagonist, she showed no concern for her mother after the spell made her look near deathly ill and badgered her about not being married. She seemed like she was more overly impulsive and got off kind of easy. Also it could have better if they showed her archery talents were somewhat amatuerish (The difference of hitting three targets and a live target is very hard) but really train at it.

Also the plot of the four clans going to war was pretty meh. The writers and such didn't seem to take them too seriously and the conflict could have been boiled over with Merinda's stunt of beating the three sons in archery and somehow been connected more with Mordu the bear monster. Also the witch looked like she was going to be more important but then just left the movie. What was her story?

There also seemed to be too much comedy. Elenore's transformation seemed more for comedy than terror, the whole conflict seems not too serious enough. I was really expecting a dark fantasy like Labyrinth but it didn't get fulfilled. But the two consecutive fight scenes in the great hall really made me laugh and there were some funny bits in the film, but overall it just felt like there was a good script that got finished as quick as possible.

21 Jump Street

I had heard nothing but good things about this movie, so I was a little worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. It did not live up to them, it exceeded them. This movie was freaking hilarious. I laughed pretty much nonstop. I made the mistake of drinking water while watching the movie. I did two spit takes as well as got water up my nose. I also laughed so hard I stopped breaking a couple of times. This is seriously one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I absolutely loved it.

Watched Stripes (Extended Cut) and Flash Gordon tonight. I have seen these numerous times, but due to a co-worker friend of mine hadn't seen either films I decided that we should watch them tonight.

Brave

Very good movie. Though not exactly Up or Nemo level. Its one of the most beautiful movies Pixar has created. Not the deepest movie or most original but fun with good heart moments and some nice laughs.

and La Luna was EXCELLENT.

I watched The Grey, Goon, Chronicle, and The Artist over the past week and a half. I loved all of them.

I also saw Amazing Spider-Man, which I mostly dug, but I had a few major complaints. The performances were great, as were the visual effects, but I felt the story was uneven and the overall dark mood wasn't entirely appropriate for a Spider-Man movie. Hopefully the sequel will be better.

Last few weeks I've seen the following:

TED - attended a preview screening with a packed audience and was with it the whole way. It feels a little long, but the laughs come pretty instantly (I won't spoil, but the narrator is genius) - brilliant couple of cameos and Mark Wahlberg really proves he can handle a big comedic role.

God Bless America - Bobcat Goldthwaite (whose World's Greatest Dad was not seen by enough people) premiered the flick at my workplace & did a Q&A. Wonderful bloke, great film - I loved the cynicism of it, though it may not hold up to repeat viewings.

Network
- (... again) - one of my favourite films ever made

21 Jump Street - Definitely one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. I kind of tuned out during the last 20 minutes or so, but it had some genuinely hilarious moments, and it's currently my second-favorite comedy of 2012, right below Goon. 4/5 Party Rock Anthems.

Bullhead - This effective drama from Belgium was a nominee for the Best Foreign Film Oscar this year and is a must for fans of quiet, character-driven crime films. It centers on a Belgian farmer who deals in the illegal activity of injecting his cattle with growth hormones who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation. It's light on action but has wonderful performances and a fascinating, almost heartbreaking plot. 4/5 Cow Syringes.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US Version)

I really liked this. As much as you can "like" a film which features some pretty horrendous acts by some pretty horrendous people. The setting for the film gave it a really powerful atmosphere - I don't come from a cold place but I felt freezing watching this movie. All the actors were great (Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in particular but everyone was great) and as you expect with Fincher the film looked great and was beautifully filmed. Also a great score which really added to the film (Trent Reznor was involved). I was pretty much riveted all the way through. 4 out of 5.

The Dark Knight Rises - While this was easily my least favorite of the Nolan Batman films, I still greatly enjoyed it. Anne Hathaway was surprisingly wonderful as Selina Kyle, and the last ten minutes or so nearly had me in tears. 4/5 Purloined Necklaces.

Rampart - An interesting character study from director Oren Moverman (The Messenger) starring Woody Harrelson as a corrupt LAPD officer in the middle of two Internal Affairs investigations. The movie drags in a lot of places, but Harrelson is greatly watchable as a truly despicable character. 3/5 Planted Guns.

Casa De Mi Padre- Without a doubt one of the strangest films of 2012. This Spanish-language comedy starring Will Ferrell, Diego Luna, and Gael Garcia Bernal sends up the same Mexican action flicks that inspired Robert Rodriguez to make El Mariachi and Desperado, and it's done with the same deadpan style that made Airplane and Black Dynamite such great parodies. This movie isn't nearly as good as those two, but I kind of liked how crazy it got while still staying somewhat faithful to its genre. It also features the weirdest sex scenes since Team America. Not a great comedy, but a nice try by Ferrell and company to try something different. 2.5/5 Talking Jaguars.

Macgruber - There were two or three genuine laughs in this film, but for the most part this latest in a long line of sub-par movies based on SNL skits is crass, unfunny, and generally embarassing for everyone involved. Will Forte needs to stick to 30 Rock cameos. 1.5/5 Strategically-Placed Celery Sticks.

The Dark Knight Rises

I loved it. Totally. Not saying it was the best of the three but I really enjoyed it. The whole cast was great. I have to say how much I loved Michael Caine in this film - I thought he was just wonderful. What a great actor. But I thought everyone did well - no one will ever be Commissioner Gordon now for me except Gary Oldman. He owns that role. Tom Hardy I loved as Bane - yep, couldn't understand him at times but I actually blame my movie theatre for not getting the sound right rather than the film makers. Anne Hathaway was fantastic....and hot.

I was kind of close with where I thought things were headed with Joseph Gordon-Levitt - but not quite. I could not have been happier with the ending - it really worked for me (Debaser - I was close to tears too! :o ).

And that score. Man that score is awesome - just builds and builds and builds. 4.5 out of 5.

Chronicle

Well, I thought the acting was kind of weak and what became of the outcast character was a bit cliched for me however I thought the story, concept and delivery of this movie was actually really good. And the fight scene in Seattle at the end I thought was one of the best super powered fight scenes I've seen in a movie to date and that includes much bigger budgeted films. 3.5 out of 5.

Goon thanks to netflix instant. I knew about this movie since it hit limited theaters. Saw it on netflix the and just never pressed play. The other night I finally did and was very happy about it. It made me want more hockey in my life by the end of it! Sean W.S. Did well. Is this his greatest role of a movie...no. But it was a fun movie over all!

Velvet Goldmine this has been in my instant que for months. OMG it is an awesome movie. Kinda trippy and out there. But the music was awesome. The visuals just catching it was so colorful. (It is a David Bowie sudo documentryish) I watched it again the next day when I got Brandon to watch it.

Both movies I would totally watch again!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

The films was beautifully shot - that's the first thing I have to say. Some great locations and cinematography. I really disliked the early movies but battled through and the last few I haven't minded at all. While not disliking this I really found it incredibly padded out and I thought it actually lacked a story arc. It doesn't feel like there's a real beginning, middle and end to this movie and that's obviously to do with the fact that it's really only part of a story. As a result though it feels paced a bit like an episode of a TV show than a film. I'll have to wait until I see the final movie but I suspect it didn't really need to be split into 2 films. I'm still giving it 3 out of 5 though due to the great look and feel of the film and the excellent feeling of dread that embodies the movie from start to finish.

Total Recall (2012) - I had fun watching this movie, but overall I was underwhelmed. In many ways, it's a technical improvement over the 1990 Paul Verhoeven film, but it had little to none of the balls-out craziness that made the earlier movie so memorable. Some of the visual callbacks to the original film, as well as to other movies made from Phillip K. Dick stories, took me out of the movie, and the last twenty minutes were uninteresting in my opinion. As mindless sci-fi entertainment, I'll give it a generous 3 out of 5 Fine-As-Hell Kate Beckinsales.

Wanderlust - While this was nowhere near the best comedy I've seen this year, I laughed a lot at it. The humor was raunchy but generally good-natured with characters that were funny and sympathetic, if not somewhat stereotyped. What impressed me most about it was how David Wain managed to make some poignant statements about the importance of communication within marriage amongst all the goofiness, which made the movie a lot deeper than I expected it to be. 3.5 out of 5 Placenta Bowls.

God Bless America - I was severely disappointed by this movie. My thoughts on it will be reflected on this week's episode of PoP!Corn and in an article on the main site that goes up this Thursday. 1 out of 5 Mental High-Fives.

Bottle Shock

This movie is a few years old now, starring Alan Rickman, Chris Pine and Bill Pullman (who I think has never been a particularly good actor), about how the wines of California/Napa Valley started gaining worldwide attention in the 70s. That might sound a bit boring and it pretty much was. As far as small films go this could have been a lot better however it fell into a lot of cliche and poor acting. On the plus side the scenery is beautiful. 2 out of 5.

Underworld: Awakening

Wow this was pretty mediocre. Bad story, bad script, a lot of bad acting (what the hell has happened to Stephen Rea?) - all around not very good. But none of that matters. I can happily watch Kate Beckinsale run around in that tight, leather outfit any time - I don't really care what the movie is like. 2.5 out 5 (and most of that score is for Kate).
