Aquaman

Eternal Crisis of the Pantsless Superheroes. Like them or hate, crises are a big part of the DCU. You can discuss them alongside books like Secret Six and other events like Green Lantern: Blackest Night.

^^^All his powers are underwater. How many criminals are plotting an underwater attack? Its just lame powers and hard for him to really team up with other heroes.

The new aquaman is cool though.

Jim Lee actually did have a costume redesign for him that looked much more armored and scaly, but it was deemed "too detailed". I guess I can't blame other artists not wanting to contend with Jim's pencils ;)

Oh yeahhh. Not a big fan of that redesign either actually but its decent. I think if he kept the belt simple and put a few less random seams everywhere it would look much better. Maybe I just don't like the orange. lol

I got surprised at how Aquaman turned out. It's definitely on my favorites of the New 52's right now. Even though I always liked Aquaman, but this? I was like DAAAANG! SOMEBODY'S A BAMF.

Aquaman #1

Yeah, liked it too. As with a lot of the other 52 we really didn't get a whole lot in the first issue and I think the diner scene maybe played out a little too long however I thought it was a pretty reasonable start. It's obvious Johns is going to put a lot of effort into the character. The thing I hope the most is that he's able to give Aquaman a personality. That's what I feel is often missing with this character - a distinct personality. It will take some time but I would like Johns to give us a real sense of who Aquaman is. I really liked the scene with Mera - something tells me their "new life" isn't going to pan out.

And then there was the art - Reis and Prado did great work here (I think they are a pretty good team). The book looked fantastic.

Aquaman #2

More good stuff. The Trench monsters are freaky. I'm not sure what that purple stuff they're spraying on people is but it can't be good. Looking forward to learning more about this new underwater race.

It was fantastic. I love the interaction between Aquaman and Mera talking about skiing. That was really just a cool character moment. This issue overall was so great.

I officially live in a world where Aquaman comics sell out before I can get a copy.

The world is frightening to me and I don't know how to cope

Aquaman #2

Another good issue. I'm really digging what Johns is doing with this book.

The art is great.

I'm really liking Mera a lot. The dynamic between her and Aquaman is cool. I love that everyone was calling her Aquawoman.

Unlike many I wasn't blown away with #1. For me it was OK at best. I have a feeling once Johns is off the book Aquaman will go back to being...well Aquaman ;)

Double ditto. Liked it - can't complain about the story and the art is fantastic. Wouldn't say I'm in love with the book or anything but I'm enjoying it. I'm really hoping in the longer term (not expecting it just yet) that Johns builds Aquaman's whole world. I think I'm going to be wanting more than just these 2 characters.

Is the stuff they're spraying on people paralysing them? That's what I kind of thought might be happening.

Aquaman #3

I really liked this issue - I actually thought it was the best so far. Something really clicked for me. Ivan Reis's art was just beautiful- it has been every issue but I thought looked extra good here and the opening page was really nice (I'm liking these little flashbacks and seeing more about Arthur's father).

I think Johns is now doing a great job of throwing in little bits and pieces that will add to Aquaman's world. Things he's obviously going to expand on at some point - for example in this issue we had the bits about Stephen Shin and also Shin's comments about Aquaman's trident. I really hope that Geoff Johns is sticking with Aquaman for a very long term.

Aquaman seems like the sort of character that really needs a personal drive behind him for success. When the character starts to change hands then that's when the writers start to flounder (no pun intended - although throwing in fish puns does seem like a fun thing to do when talking about this comic) and not know what to do with him. I think as long as he remains in the hands of Geoff Johns who seems to have a clear vision for the character then this will definitely be worth reading. I think of all the reboots this character may have needed it and has benefited from it the most.

Got around to reading the first three issues.

I loved it. This'll probably make the pull list for as long as Johns is writing.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives
