While the Survivor Series is no longer held on Thanksgiving it is still considered a holiday tradition amongst wrestling fans. The team vs. team match is what makes the Survivor Series stand out. Many of the teams were dream teams of your favorite wrestlers who fought together for one night. These are six of my favorite Survivor Series teams.
The Hulkamaniacs (1989) Members: Hulk Hogan, Jake Roberts, Demolition
Hogan was king of the mountain. The prayers and vitamin eating where at an all time high. Jake Roberts was in a great feud with Ted Dibiase, and Demoliton were the Tag Champs at the time. Hogan would go on to be the lone survivor, not a surprise since he was then what John Cena is today. I actually think it’s time for Cena to start wagging his finger at his opponents and coming out wearing yellow and red.
Edge & Christian/The Hardy Boyz (1999) Members: Edge, Christian, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy
Both of these teams would have some of the most highflying matches against each other but on this night they were a team. The brought a lot of high energy and exuberance to every match so to put them all on the same side you knew you couldn’t blink because you just might miss something. This was obviously before the drugs and adultery would ruin the friendly dynamic these teams had with each other.
Stone Cold Steve Austin assembled a team that had a representative from WCW (Booker T), ECW (RVD, Dudley’s), and the Attitude Era (Shawn Michaels). This wasn’t purposefully done but it interesting to look at the teams make up. Austin put this team together to keep him in the WWE as his job was on the line. Although they lost Austin was brought back faster than most killed off comic book characters.
Team WWF (2001) Members: The Rock, Undertaker, Chris Jericho, Kane, Big Show
This is a fantastic line up. Who is the weak link here? You can make a case of who isn’t but the weakest member of this team is capable of leading their own team and no one would blink an eye at it. This team has size, strength, technique, and loads of charisma.
They were the opponents for The Rock’s Team WWF. This was the time of the takeover of WCW and ECW. Stone Cold had recently switch sides in the battle and Shane had bought WCW to spite his dad. Overall this is a very solid team but if you line them up against Team WWF they are overshadowed. Shane is clearly the answer to the question…which one of these things doesn’t belong here?
Team Savage (1987)
Members: Macho Man Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Jake Roberts, Brutus Beefcake, Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Savage would eventually have some pretty epic battles with each member of this team but for one night he captained them during a Survivor Series match. Jim Duggan could still move around and Jake Roberts had the DDT, which was a finisher back then. Beefcake was there to hold the ropes open for everyone as they came into the ring.
