The PoP! Stars scour all of teh internetz in search of the most Fabulous Females of Fandom. Please keep it in your pants.
Our newest Fangirl of the Month comes to us from within the comic book industry itself. She is a veritable living, breathing, comic book vixen and – as I learned in talking with her, one heckuva sweet gal! PoP!: You’ve walked a number of different career paths throughout your life. How did you enter into the comic book industry?
Holly G!: Because of a lack of creative fulfillment, I left the fashion industry…took a quick course at the learning annex, got a portfolio together, and made my way to a comic book convention. Got work right away and kept looking and finding small gigs. I was happy to work on any project that was serious and groovy!
PoP!: Wow, a real live “putting in your paces” kind of success story. So what came first, working in comics or a love of the medium?
Holly G!: I started my career by asking “what is my Bliss,” and I remembered LOVING comic books! I believe that your career should be something you love!
PoP!: So how much of yourself do you bring to your career? Broadsword Comics has a strong theme of spell craft throughout its titles. Is this a personal inclination of yours?
Holly G!: Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose is a Wiccan character. I myself am a Witch. I do rituals, candle therapy, & have read the Tarot Cards since I was 8 years old. But I don’t put myself in any category of Neo-Pagan, Wiccan or Left Path…I’m solitary and Happy.
PoP!: Though your beliefs may vary from hers, our fans will no doubt notice the likeness – is it true you’re not only Jim’s colorist (and wife), but his model as well?
Holly G!: Yes, I do model for Jim – and he models for me! A lot of my male characters are tall, slender and blond.
PoP!: A-ha! I thought I’d noticed a trend! So, what are your current Fangirl obsessions?
Holly G!: Japanese Manga-to-Movie Chick Flicks like Nana or Hula Girls!
PoP!: I… have to confess, I did not even know that was a genre. Might be just what I need to cure my aversion to chick flicks!
Holly G!: I sit there bawling or yelling at the characters to dump the chump! I have Linda Linda Linda on my Netflix Queue and Man on a Train….oooOOoo can’t wait!
PoP!: Well then, here’s hoping you don’t have to wait too long. While we’re on the topic of romance, what is the most Fangirl-ish thing you’ve ever done?
Holly G!: Jim and I had a Star Wars Wedding. I wore a Slave Leia bikini and Jim the Vader armor….does it get more Fangirl than that?!
PoP!: No, I suppose not. So… aside from marrying Darth Vader, what has been your biggest Geek-Out Moment?
Holly G!: Oh Gosh… that IS a long list…Hangin’ out with David Prowse, being asked to do art for Howard Jones, meeting Mark Hamill when I was 15, meeting Carrie Fisher… getting to illustrate Princess Leia for a Mag Cover. While at the San Diego Comic Con, I met Chris Sanders (the creator of Stitch) and TOTALLY geeked out. I think I scared him a little bit, but I can’t help getting emotional about the art I love. I guess that’s a few of the more notable ones.
PoP!: A few? I’d consider that a pretty pedigreed list in and of itself! Alright… last question. So, work and wedding aside, how has being a Fangirl affected other aspects of your life?
Holly G!: It really shaped my life. I have passion for everything I pursue and surround myself with….I also feel very akin to others who are Geeks and Fans, so I’m VERY respectful to the Geek in everyone because I’m so in touch with my own.
